Monte Bello Open Space Preserve

Los Altos, CA · 2020 & 2026

Up in the Foothill mountains of the Bay Area, Monte Bello Trail was the go to spot for my friends and I at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rolling hills of grass on the left, forests and dense forest on the right, and the valley splitting them down the middle created an awesome backdrop for a picnic and hike.

  1. A dirt trail curving up a bright green spring hillside, framed overhead by the bare mossy branches of an oak, with fog sitting on the forested ridge behind.

  2. The same kind of trail in late summer: a narrow path through dry golden grass, deep in the shade of a big live oak, under a hard blue sky.
    2/6Revisiting the same spot (2026)
  3. A long view over rolling gold grassland dropping into a dark evergreen canyon, with ridge after ridge fading blue toward the horizon.
    3/6Rolling golden hills (2026)
  4. Waist-high dry oat grass filling the frame against a deep blue sky, the hilltop cutting a clean line across the top.
4/6Endless fields of tall grass infront of a cloudless blue sky (2026)
  5. A sunlit golden knoll dotted with low shrubs in the foreground, backed by a wall of dark conifer forest and a bare ridge beyond.
5/6Looking out across the valley (2026)
  6. A faint footpath through tall dry grass toward a scattering of oaks on the skyline, a single contrail crossing the blue sky above.
6/6Start of the trail near the carpark (2026)
